gang-related, with victims as young as 14 years old. >> i think they finally realized, you know, how short-staffed we really are. and they understand, and they're out to help. >> reporter: this san jose native hopes this continues. just last month, he says someone broke into his east san jose home and stole thousands of dollars worth of items, some priceless. >> mostly electronics, jewelry. my wife's laptop with the kids picture on there that i didn't backup. more frustrated now because i thought it was just the home, bad luck. but now this incident at my work too. >> reporter: and off camera, some business owners telling us at this industrial park some companies have moved out because it's gotten so troublesome since the bar moved in. coming up tonight at 6:00, more on the cuts to specialized police units that usually monitor places like this. how that may be impacting investigations. live in north san jose, stephanie trong, nbc bay areas news. a big shake-up tonight where

dozens of officers are now accused of misconduct during three of the city's occupy protests. the department today revealed it received more than 1100 complaints in the past year, ranging from issues like excessive force to failing to turn on video cameras. the chief says an internal investigation has led to misconduct allegations. are you ready? against 44 officers. he has recommended that two be fired and one demoted. the rest will receive suspensions or reprimands. training and counseling could be ordered for some as well. they were first arrested for stealing her car. now they're facing murder charges too. investigators with the hercules police department have officially named darnell and tania washington as suspects in the killing of an east bay teacher, 55-year-old susie ko. police in washington state spotted the pair driving ko's car on wednesday, and after a chase arrested them. detectives from hercules have traveled north to interview the two suspects.

they say darnell recently escaped from a southern california prison, and that his wife helped him. the couple had been on the run since late august. and moments ago we learned their bail has been set at $3 million each. san francisco firefighters are trying to determine what caused a massive four-alarm fire that gutted a popular restaurant and brought muni to a crawl today. the squat and gobble restaurant on westport tall caught fire this morning deep into the interior of the building. and as a result there was a partial roof collapse. firefighters say that fire spread to the wine shop and a dental office as well. so crews had to bring in so much heavy equipment that the muni trains couldn't pass through the west portal station for some five hours. >> i'm supposed to be lecturing right now at san francisco state. obviously i'm not there. >> it's really inconvenient. and as much as i feel bad about what is going on, i do have to get to work. >> now muni did set up bus bridges to get around the tunnel, and three firefighters

were hurt, including one who suffered from smoke inhalation. an autopsy is being performed on a popular union city high school teacher to figure out how he died. the body of 54-year-old christopher ryan was found late yesterday at the bottom of a ravine near crystal springs reservoir. he had taught english and social science at james logan high school since 1994. a redwood city resident reported him missing on tuesday. his car was found abandoned near the reservoir on wednesday. at the high school today, grief counselors were on hand to talk with students and staff. decision 2012 now. the day after. and both vice president -- the vice president and his gop rival are claiming a win at last night's debate. but this is new fallout tonight. mitt romney is now accusing joe biden of not being truthful about the murder of u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three others who died in libya. steve handelsman is in the battleground state of ohio with more. >> reporter: the election could

offered them below market loan rates. solyndra is seeking damages of at least $1.5 billion for the loss of its business. a director, though, for one of the chinese companies tells bloomberg the lawsuit is solyndra's way of making china a scapegoat for its failure. a down day for stocks. the market closed today with its worst week since early june. now the day started with modest gains, but ended mixed after the first round of corporate earnings. okay. let the rumors begin. tech bloggers are now speculating that apple is set to release a mini ipad before the end of this month. reuters is reporting that apple will hold a special event on october 23rd. for month there's has been speculation that the company has been working on a smaller, cheaper version of the ipad to compete with its rivals. so far apple is not commenting. still ahead at 5:00, one of the president's men drunk?

a new potentially embarrassing situation for the secret service. and reaching across the aisle to fight? the political scuffle that almost turned physical. and good afternoon. i'm jeff ranieri in the nbc bay area weather center. after the rain this week, we're tracking another system that is developing offshore. here is the good news about some of this rain lately. it has helped to decrease the allergy forecast. we'll have details on what our rain chances will be over the weekend, coming up in just a few minutes. and traffic is crawling in los angeles. but it's not your normal gridlock. the tricky maneuvering to get the space shuttle "endeavour" to its final resting place. back in a moment.

firefighters this morning. the fire started just before 4:00 at a home on carling on the avenue near good sam hospital. the intense heat set off the bullets, causing them to explode. the couple inside was able to escape, but are being treated for burns tonight. investigators are still traying to determine the cause of this fire, but the couple believes it started in the kitchen. while the bill to overhaul pg&e's gas pipeline system will be paid mostly by the utility. after that september explosion which killed eight and destroyed dozens of homes, the utility had proposed billing customers for 85% of the costs of repairs. today the state public utilities commission tentatively ruled that the utility will pay 2/3 of the overhaul expenses and the consumers the final third. shareholders will pay cost overruns. the pg&e has estimated an upgrade to the system could be as much as a $2 billion project over several years. the final decision now goes to the five-member commission.

the 14-year-old pakistani girl shot in the head and neck by taliban gunmen earlier this week is improving. the young teenager is recovering at a military hospital outside the city after undergoing surgery. she remains on a ventilator and is still unconscious. the girl was shot for her outspoken support of education for women in pakistan. a spokesman says the girl's family had been warned several time about her outspokenness before trackers tracked her route home from school and shot her. two suspects have been arrested. a close race for congress is getting a little physical in southern california. you saw it there. brad sherman threw his arm around howard berman in this youtube clip. a little uncomfortable. the two had been debating about the dream act last night. berman kind of stepped back, and a debate organizer and a sheriff's deputy stood behind them. the congressmen are both running against each other for the

reelection in november. a spokesperson for sherman said the congressman regretted the incident, but denies he was trying to start a fight, just getting a little closer. another potentially embarrassing moment for the secret service tonight. an agent placed in handcuffs after an alleged drunken episode. miami police made the arrest early this morning hours after president obama had visited south florida for a grassroots rally and fundraiser. they say they found the agent lying near an intersection close to a popular night life area. he had blood shot eyes, slurred speech, and smelled strongly of alcohol. officer says he became aggressive during a pat-down and reportedly hit one of them in the chin. okay. traffic moving 2 miles an hour on the streets of los angeles. that's not really that unusual, right? but it is unusual hen the cause of the slowdown is a space shuttle. nbc's stephanie stanton is in los angeles. okay, you see some really unusual things in the los angeles streets, but you usually don't see a space shuttle. >> reporter: yeah.

typically not. this has been an incredible sight today. folks came out to essentially witness history. i am at the pit stop area. the first pit stop area. the shuttle has since moved on. let's take a live look at where it is right now. it's at the next stop, expected to be there for about six hours. now, you know, the city of los angeles has literally rolled out the steel carpet for the shuttle. they've laid down some 9,000 pounds of steel to reinforce the streets to handle the weight of this shuttle. the city has been planning this event for about a year. they've had to cut down several trees, remove a bunch of streetlights, all for "endeavour's" final mission. "endeavour" made its first stop about three and a half miles into the 12-mile journey to its final resting place at the california signs center. officials calling it a logistical pit stop. >> this was guided by logistical

concerns in times of timing. we closed some runways last night at l.a.x. and these folks wouldn't like us to do it in the day, passengers wouldn't like that. >> reporter: the shuttle departed l.a.x. on its 200,000 pound transport vehicle and began rolling around 2:00 a.m. spectators lined the streets to witness a piece of history. >> it's the american dream. it's an american icon. it's an american hero. >> i'm 20, but it's going to be one of the highlights of my life. i'm never going to see something like this again. >> reporter: the 12-mile journey dubbed mission 26 is quite an endeavor. shuttle controllers will navigate l.a. streets at a top speed of just 2 miles an hour, at some points just inches away from buildings. >> it is impossible to look back at this and not say look at what we can do. we can accomplish anything. >> reporter: captain mark kelly served as commander of "endeavour's" final mission, and says fans will get an extra treat when visiting the shuttle at the science center.

>> try to display it in the vertical with an external tank like it's on the launch pad. it will be pretty exciting. >> reporter: and also a chance officials hope to boost kids' interest in math and science. >> "endeavour's" new mission is to inspire people of all ages, really, to inspire the next generation of scientists, colorers and engineers. >> reporter: "endeavour's" final frontier is somewhat of a homecoming. the shuttle was built in southern california and will be the only shuttle displayed on the west coast. now if everything goes as planned, the shuttle will reach its final destination some time tomorrow night. we're live in los angeles, i'm stephanie stanton, nbc bay area news. >> all right, thank you very much. here is something else that might be a welcome sight for skiers and snowboarders. snow! say hello to it. it's heavenly mountain resort there is a snowman and some snow. official says both heavenly and

kirkwood received about an inch from an overnight storm. some resorts hope to have enough snow to open by maybe early next month that would be great. usually it's like december. >> i can see the wheels turning. >> the past couple of years it's been after thanksgiving, and we had such a shortened ski season. let's check with chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. cool today. but changes are coming? >> definitely. we're going to work on that snow forecast for you, janelle. i know you can get excited, start talking fast there. let's take a look at the satellite picture. well did have the satellite picture earlier this week. at's all pushed to the south. we're monitoring another system for the weekend. we're going to detail chance of showers for that in case you didn't get enough of this little guy right here. frosty the snowman action up at heavenly, from 1 to 2 inches of snow. not good enough to go skiing on. but as we talked about over the next month and a half, looks like we may get some much larger snowmen than this, and also get you across the ski lifts. let's take a look here.

while we are seeing things get close to where we should be for fall, september was one of the fifth warmest septembers at mt. hamilton, where temperatures did average int the upper 70s. meanwhile, in san francisco one of the second coolest septembers on record, with mid-60s there across a lot of the san francisco peninsula. so real wide extremes throughout september. right now on the weather boards, we're starting to find numbers a little bit more like fall here. plenty of widespread 60s. a little cooler than average, from 5 to 10 degrees. and so cool down here in the south bay. also starting to get in on some 50, right across cupertino and also in los gatos. take the jacket if you're headed out anywhere from tonight. let's head to the sky camera network. clouded in across san francisco. we'll also have the fog here for tonight coming back on in. now as we get you back to the weather boards, the storm door is open, pushing all that moisture up into washington and oregon. we have a system out here. but we're not expecting too much rainfall from that. we're going to keep our eyes focused on is this area of high pressure building in from the

west. it's going to be good enough to give us a warm-up that could jump temperatures 20 to even 30 degrees by about the next four to five days. so throughout saturday, we'll have the foggy start for us. then by sunday, that's the day and the weekend you want to plan all of your activities outside as temperatures are expected to increase. so throughout tonight, we'll have the cloud cover here across san francisco. also the north bay. then by tomorrow morning, here is when we get a little slight chance of shower. best chance of any kind of raindrops up into the north bay. it looks dry for the east bay, south bay, and also the peninsula. then by the afternoon hours on saturday, we'll start to clear out and get some filtered sunshine. but remember, again sunday looks to be the warmest and the sunniest of your weekend if you're making plans right now. 72 in los gatos for your high. 47 in sunnyvale of also low to mid-70s back in the east bay. walnut creek should pop up to 75. 73 in pleasanton. 69 in hayward. san francisco close to 70, but not quite there. 73 in santa rosa, and 69 in berkeley.
